How To Make Tofu With a Tofu Maker Kit
August 22nd, 2007    Subscribe To Our FeedDo you prefer to know exactly what is in the food you are eating and that it is as fresh as possible? Investing in a tofu maker kit will mean that you can use the best, freshest ingredients and avoid any unwanted added extras, like salt. Making tofu at home with a tofu making kit will give you more control over the quality of your diet (and it is satisfying and economical, too!).
Tofu Maker Kits are relatively inexpensive . The SoyQuick Tofu Kit, for example, retails at $17.95. There is a special offer on, at the moment, where the Tofu Maker Kit is included free of charge when you purchase the Soyquick Soymilk Maker SDZ-5
What Is A Tofu Maker Kit?
A tofu making kit usually consists of a press, muslin cloth or cheesecloth and tofu coagulator. All you need to add is fresh soymilk. The coagulator will separate the soymilk into curds and whey which are poured into the tofu press. The press removes the water and forms the tofu into a block. One batch of fresh soymilk makes approximately 7 - 14 oz (195-395 grams) of great tasting tofu. The size and firmness of the tofu is dictated by how much water is pressed out and how long the tofu is left to “set” in the press. Make your own flavored tofu and tofu dessert, or add your favorite herbs to make delicious herb tofu by adding herbs or extracts to the soymilk before adding the coagulant.
Tofu coagulators are mineral salts that separate the solid soy proteins from the water creating curds and whey. There are two types of coagulators - magnesium chloride and nigari salts - one of which will usually be provided with the tofu maker kit. These should be food grade minerals in a powdered form, manufactured for the purpose of making tofu.
How To Make Tofu
Take a pot of freshly made soymilk
Stir in 1 packet of coagulator (1 1/2 to 2 teaspoons, depending on the firmness wanted)
Cover pot and allow to stand for 20 minutes
The soymilk should have now separated into curds and whey
Place muslin in the tofu press
Pour curds and whey into press
Fold the remaining sides of cheesecloth on top of the Tofu and use the press to press out water. For soft tofu, press gently to form the block and allow to stand for 15-20 minutes in the press. For firm tofu, press more forcefully and allow to stand in the tofu press with a weight on top (a glass of water for a light weight, or couple of books for a heavier weight) for 1 hour. The more the tofu is pressed, the firmer the tofu will be.
All done!
You will be surprised by the huge difference in taste of home-made tofu compared to shop-bought tofu. Fresh tofu is delicious especially when still warm or immediately after you have made it, so give a Tofu Maker Kit a try

Try a Tasty Baked Tofu Recipe
June 26th, 2007    Subscribe To Our FeedThere are many wonderful baked tofu recipes in which you can use tofu, either in place of meat or simply as an added ingredient. For vegetarians and vegans, tofu can be used to replace meat or poultry completely. For those who are health conscious or watching their waistline, by using half tofu/half meat you can reduce the amount of meat in your diet, helping your heart without giving up red meat completely. When it comes to baking, tofu is just as versatile in the oven as it is in the wok.It can be marinated and baked as a snack or be a complete dish by itself.
Add Flavor to Your Tofu
Tofu comes in soft, regular and firm consistencies but most baked tofu recipes will require the firm or extra firm tofu. Baked tofu has a chewy texture, with a soft middle. If you freeze then press tofu you will have a texture closer to that of real meat and can use it as a meat substitute in any dish. You can also slice and bake tofu as a snack.
A tasty marinade is a necessity in many baked tofu recipes.Tofu can be pretty tasteless by itself but it acts like a sponge, soaking up the flavors from the marinade. If you are using a tomato or other highly flavored sauce in the recipe, then you won’t need a separate marinade - the tofu will absorb the flavors from the sauce or tomato .
Adapt Your Favorite Recipes
Tofu is very versatile and adapts well to almost any recipe. Many of your favorite dishes can be converted to a baked tofu recipe simply by replacing the meat or poultry. Baked lasagna becomes baked tofu lasagna.Chicken parmesan becomes tofu parmesan.
So dig out Grandma’s cookbook and start turning those old favorites into some new, nutritious baked tofu recipes - particularly useful if you or a member of your family has heart or cholesterol problems. By using a mixture of tofu and meat, they won’t even notice that you are reducing the amount of meat in their diet.
